The UT vigilance department on Saturday arrested a senior assistant in the accounts department of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000.
The accused, identified as Rajesh Kumar, was arrested while allegedly accepting the bribe from a city resident at the housing board office in Sector 9, Chandigarh.
Sources in the vigilance department said the complainant, Vicky, had been allotted a flat in the housing board colony at Sector 51. The complainant’s allotment file had a few objections following which he was not getting clearance. Vicky used to go to the CHB office where he met the accused, who allegedly told him that he would get his file cleared and approved in lieu of money. He also promised that his file would be forwarded to the senior authorities.
The complainant approached the vigilance department and also took along phone recordings to prove his claims. Vicky told the police that he had already paid Rs 2,000 to the accused but he was demanding another rS 7,000.
The complainant said the accused had asked him to come to his house, but later called him to the CHB office. Vigilance sleuths laid a trap and caught Kumar red-handed while accepting the bribe.
UT senior superintendent of police (SSP vigilance) Maneesh Chaudhary said another Rs 30,000 was also recovered from the accused. The source of the money recovered was being verified, he added The vigilance sleuths are also searching the house of the accused.
