Chandigarh: Motorcyclist killed in road accident

A 29-year-old motorcyclist was killed after he was hit by a truck near a bus stop at Khuda Ali Sher here on Saturday morning.

The truck driver managed to escape from the spot but was later arrested by the police.

The victim has been identified as Mandeep Singh alias Dimpi, a resident of Khuda Ali Sher. Mandeep was employed as a plumber on contract basis in a private shop at Sector-16.

Mandeep was going towards Sector 16 on his motorcycle (PB-08BN-1479) at around 8:20am when he was hit from behind by a truck (HR-56J-0001).

The victim fell on the road and started to bleed profusely. A passerby informed the police about the incident. The police team rushed the victim to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where he was declared brought dead.

The registration number of the truck helped the police trace its owner.

The driver has been identified as Nekraj, a resident of Chandimandir. The police have booked him under Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act of endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sector-11 police station.

In another incident, a truck from Himachal Pradesh hit a scooterist from behind at the signal of Housing Board Chowk in Panchkula at around 11:30 am.

The truck driver applied sudden brakes, hitting the man who was driving the scooter and dragging him about 50 feet forward.
The victim, who suffered severe leg injury, was admitted by the police to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.
