An alleged mafia member named Sukhdev Singh and his aide were killed in an encounter with a team of the Chandigarh police’s crime branch near Verka Park on the Baghapurana Road in Moga on Wednesday night.
Police sources identified Sukhdev’s accomplice as Gossa, a resident of Sangatpura village near Moga. Both were shot and died on the spot. Two policemen were injured — the gangsters allegedly fired first — and are admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana.
Sub-inspector Rajdeep Singh, who was injured, was part of the team of 8-10 cops headed for Channuwala village of Baghapurana to arrest three men wanted for assaulting and robbing a youth in Chandigarh. The two men killed were not expressly named in that case.
But when the UT police team reached the Moga bypass, they got suspicious about a vehicle coming from the opposite side. Shots were then fired from that vehicle, and S-I Rajdeep and head constable Surinder Kumar got injured. The police retaliated and shot down Sukhdev ‘Car Bazaar Wale’, allegedly part of land mafia and also a drug smuggler, and his aide. Further details were not available immediately.
The case for which the Chandigarh police team had gone to Moga related to a student having been thrashed and tortured by three men at his rented residence in Sector 22, Chandigarh, on June 22.
Victim Harpinder Singh, a native of Moga, was in Chandigarh to study for an English proficiency test (IELTS) as he wanted to migrate abroad. The police had registered the case against Gurcharan Singh alias Rinku, Sashpal Singh, and Shinder Singh for criminal intimidation, robbery, conspiracy, and under the IT Act as they had allegedly made a humiliating video too.
Sources said the men had been sent by a person who lives abroad and had an old enmity with Harpinder. The victim had also alleged that the assailants had called Jagmeet Singh and Balraj Singh in the US after assaulting him.
Meanwhile, Chandigarh DSPs Jagbir Singh and Ashish Kapoor, and three more UT police teams, were sent to Moga after the incident.
