With WhatsApp fast emerging as a tool to check crime, the Chandigarh Police on Tuesday launched a WhatsApp tool “Crime Stopper” for residents to share their grievances and complaints against police officials. The residents can also send information about other crimes to the police by sending videos and photographs.

Giving details, senior superintendent of police ( SSP) Sukhchain Singh Gill said residents could share information about crime on WhatsApp number 7087239010.

The SSP said he had been receiving calls relating to crime and misbehaviour of police officials from residents, but it was difficult to nail them in the absence of evidence. “Keeping this in mind, a Crime Stopper has been launched so that residents can share video or pictures as evidence on WhatsApp.”

He said the name of complainants would not be disclosed but the police would have to verify the details provided by the source.

He said if residents see any police official indulging in corruption or a crime being committed, they can send the information, including video clippings and pictures on the Crime Stopper number. He said the police would immediately act on the complaint.

The SSP said the police registered a total of 505 cases in July of which 156 were registered under the Excise Act, 72 for gambling and 33 under the NDPS Act. In August, the police registered 154 cases under the Excise Act, 35 for gambling and 20 under the NDPS Act, he added.
