The police on Wednesday arrested a school bus conductor for allegedly molesting a five-year-old girl, a student of LKG of Stepping Stones Senior Secondary School, Sector 38A.
The accused has been identified as 22-year-old Jagjeet Singh, a resident of Mullanpur. The matter came to light when the girl’s parents approached the principal on Wednesday urging him to take action against the conductor who had allegedly molested their daughter on Thursday (May 7) when she was in the bus. The girl’s father alleged that the conductor was molesting her for the past many days, but she told her parents about it only after they noticed that she was unusually keeping quite.
The school principal failed to satisfy the parents leading to heated arguments. The parents then approached the Sector 39 police station. High drama was witnessed outside the school premises around 1.30pm when girl’s parents, relatives and members of an NGO raised slogans against the principal for failing to take action against the accused.
“We were agitated by the principal’s attitude as he was reluctant to listen to our complaints. He bluntly said he would not take any action and we could beat the guy to death,” said Raj Singh, president of the Human Rights’ Manch, Chandigarh.
The victim’s father claimed that he approached the bus owner Amrik Singh on Thursday to file a complaint against the conductor.
He said the owner assured him of sacking the conductor but on Monday, the same conductor came to pick up the girl. “We made several request to the principal to take action against the conductor, but he was not ready to listen. He also misbehaved and we approached the police,” said the victim’s father.
Principal Sanjiv Kumar said the conductor was immediately sacked by the bus owner and a notice was issued to the faculty members regarding the complaint. “As it was a sensitive issue, I issued a notice to the teachers to find out if any other student was also molested in the bus. I got a written complaint from the girl’s parents on Wednesday after which I immediately informed the police,” he claimed.
Demanding action against the principal, the girl’s parents accused him of ignoring their complaint and threatening them with dire consequences if they dragged the school in the case.
Bus owner Amrik Singh said he was associated with the school for the past 30 years and the conductor was his employee for the past five years. He claimed that he immediately sacked the conductor after receiving the complaint.
