Police have arrested two youths for allegedly stealing onions from the Sector 26 grain market. The police nabbed the accused and recovered two bags of onion that the duo was carrying on a three-wheeler in the wee hours on Monday.
The accused have been identified as 19-year-old Ravi, a resident of Shastri Nagar in Manimajra, and Sunny of New Dhanas Colony. Cops said the youth were seen moving around in a three-wheeler (HR-68A-9265) in the grain market around 3am. After some time, they allegedly parked the vehicle near wholesale shops, where a huge quantity of onions was stacked.
Ravinder Singh, a witness, said he saw Ravi loading two bags of onions on to the three-wheeler while Sunny remained in the vehicle and kept its ignition on. Although Ravinder tried to stop them, they fled, following which he quickly informed the police.
A special patrolling team apprehended the duo after a chase and recovered the bags of onion. Sector 26 station house officer (SHO) Poonam Dilvari said during interrogation, the accused confessed that they had stolen onions to make some easy money. They were planning to sell the onions at the kisan mandi or nearby vegetable markets.
Cops have impounded the three-wheeler and registered a case against the duo under Sections 379 (theft) and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sector 26 police station. The two had been sent to judicial custody, said the SHO.
