The Chandigarh boys prevailed over Haryana 2-0 to win the North Zone leg of the 36th Coca-Cola Sub-Junior (under-15) football tournament that concluded at MSLM ground in Sundernagar, Himachal Pradesh, on Friday.
In a closely fought final, the UT team adopted an aggressive approach from the start and were persistent in their attacks on the opposition defences.
The tactic paid off in the eleventh minute when Ashray Bharadwaj, who was later named the man of the match, scored a goal to put his side into 1-0 lead.
Haryana strikers, too, made some fine attempts to score an equaliser, but their efforts went in vain owing to a tight defence by Chandigarh backline.
The UT team maintained the 1-0 scoreline going into the half-time break. In the second half, both the teams tried to outdo each other for most of the time but failed to score the goal.
In the dying minutes of the game, Chandigarh’s Yudhveer Singh finally found the back of the net and rounded off the winners tally.
The event had seen teams from Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Delhi vie for the top honour.
