Patients at the new outpatient department (OPD) at Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) had a hard time as most of the contractual staff working at the OPD registration counters was on leave on Monday.

Most of them were on leave to take an examination for regular posts of clerk conducted by the PGIMER. Though, anticipating the situation, PGIMER administration started registration of patients at 6.30am, but the alternative staff sourced from a contractor was not quick enough leading to delays and confusion.

Lengthy queues were seen at the OPD with patients having to wait for long to get their registration cards.

Mondays are the most busy days at PGIMER's OPD with the day seeing maximum flow of patients.

However, PGIMER officials said despite all difficulties, they were able to deal with the situation. Around 8,500 patients were registered in the OPD on Monday.

There were around 12,000 candidates who appeared for the examination for the post of clerk. Out of these, a large number of them are already working on a contract at the institute.
