Chatrath group sweeps PU syndicate poll

Gopal Krishan Chatrath-led alliance strengthened its grip over the Panjab University syndicate by securing 10 out of the total 15 seats at stake. The rival group led by Ashok Goyal had to contend with five seats.

Last year, Chatrath group had secured eight seats, while Goyal’s group had got seven seats. Elections were contested in three out of six faculties - arts, science and combined - while members were elected unopposed in languages, law and medical sciences faculties.

As per PU calendar, three members each are elected from arts, science and combined faculties and two each from languages, law and medical sciences.

As anticipated, Chatrath group did well in the arts faculty by clinching all the three seats that were bagged by Dr Dinesh Kumar with 31 votes, followed by Dr Parveen Kaur Chawla with 28 votes and Dr Sanjeev Kumar Arora with 27 votes. Dr Iqbal Singh Sandhu (26), Jarnail Singh (24) and Dr Navdeep Goyal (33), all members of Chatrath group, emerged victorious in the sciences faculty.

In the combined faculty, prof Ronki Ram (45), Dr Gurdip Kumar Shar ma ( 41), both members of Chatrath group, and prof Karamjeet Singh (38) of Goyal group registered wins. Ashok Goyal group dominated languages and medical sciences faculties as all their members were elected unopposed.

From languages, Ashok Goyal and prof Rajesh Gill were elected unopposed, while in the medical sciences prof AK Bhandari and Naresh Gaur were elected.

In the law faculty, Chatrath and another member of his group Dr Yog Raj Angrish were elected unopposed.
