Weather hit the travel plans of city residents on Thursday as dense fog led to the cancellation of all 15 flights operating from the airport. Most trains also ran behind schedule.
The Unchahar Express between Allahabad and Chandigarh chugged in more than 16 hours 30 minutes late at the city railway station and its departure was delayed by three hours.
The Howrah-Kalka train was running 10 hours delayed from its arrival time in Chandigarh. The Lucknow-Chandigarh Express arrived 2 hours 30 minutes late delaying the departure of the same train by 4 hours. The Sadbhavana Express arrived 7 hours 15 minutes late, with its return train departing 8 hours behins schedule. The train plying between Chandigarh and Chennai was 7 hours 30 minutes late.
City 2 degrees colder than Shimla
Santa is likely to have preferred a colder Chandigarh than Shimla for his stay on Christmas on Thursday. The city was over 2 degrees Celsius colder than Shimla with a maximum temperature of 11.0 degree Celsius; Shimla recording a 13.2 degree Celsius.
However, city’s nights were warmer at 6.6 degrees Celsius as Shimla was a lot chillier at 3.7 degree Celsius. Interstingly, on Wednesday the city had recorded the maximum temperature of 19.8 degree Celsius and a minimum of 3.2 degree Celsius. This made Tuesday night the coldest of the year, so far.
A met official said the almost doubling of the minimum recorded temperature on Thursday was most likely due to the presence of a Western Disturbance.
The meteorological department added that the cold weather would persist and dense fog would reduce visibility, which would remain less than 100m.
The department has forecast that on December 26, the maximum temperature would be recorded 19 degree and the minimum would be 4 degree Celsius.
On December 27, the maximum will stay the same and the minimum recorded would be 5 degree Celsius.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature is forecast at 18 degree Celsius and minimum at 5 degree Celsius.
