The municipal corporation has decided to hold a re-auction of 16 paid parking lots in the city on January 12. These lots, lying unused for over a year now, had failed to find a bidder in the previous auction on November 12 as bidders refused to participate owing to a dispute between the corporation and the contractors over imposition of service tax of 12.36% and pending payment of around Rs 50 lakh for free city passes.
Of 24 paid parking lots, that earn the civic body around Rs 4 crore a year, 17 have been lying unused.
The contractors claim that the MC forfeited their security amounting to Rs 1 crore, to pay the retrospectively charged service tax of 12.36%. The MC has also paid `50 lakh to the contractors for city passes for past two years, they claimed.
Additional commissioner Sarita Malik said, “We expect a good response as a number of people have expressed interest in participating in the auction.”

Sec-17 underground parking lot in a shambles
The tall claims of the civic body of maintaining underground parking lots appear to have fallen flat as the facility opposite the office medical officer, health, is in a shambles. Garbage dots the area, with puddles of water in every corner. The two-level lot can accommodate 700 two-wheelers and 100 four-wheelers. However, an HT team found one of the levels to be locked.
