Chd MC to re-auction 16 parking lots on Jan 12

The municipal corporation has decided to hold a re-auction of 16 paid parking lots in the city on January 12. These lots, lying unused for over a year now, had failed to find a bidder in the previous auction on November 12 as bidders refused to participate owing to a dispute between the corporation and the contractors over imposition of service tax of 12.36% and pending payment of around Rs 50 lakh for free city passes.

Of 24 paid parking lots, that earn the civic body around Rs 4 crore a year, 17 have been lying unused.

The contractors claim that the MC forfeited their security amounting to Rs 1 crore, to pay the retrospectively charged service tax of 12.36%. The MC has also paid `50 lakh to the contractors for city passes for past two years, they claimed.

Additional commissioner Sarita Malik said, “We expect a good response as a number of people have expressed interest in participating in the auction.”

For the latest auction, Sahib Singh parking lot in Sector 35 has the highest reserve price of Rs 47.93 lakh, followed by Himalaya Marg, Chandigarh, at Rs 45.26 lakh. At Rs 1.79 lakh, the lowest reserve price is for the parking lot adjoining Neelam Cinema, Sector 17. The last date for receipt of technical bids is on January 2 (Friday), which will be opened on January 5.

In an auction held in December 2013, the Sahib Singh parking lot secured the highest bid of Rs 71 lakh against the reserve price of Rs 43 lakh, followed by the Empire Stores parking in Sector 17, which went for Rs 52 lakh against the reserve price of `26.40 lakh.

In the June 2013 auction, the parking lot in Sector 35-C along the Himalaya Marg bagged the highest bid of Rs 67.05 lakh against the reserve price of Rs 42.23 lakh.

Sec-17 underground parking lot in a shambles

The tall claims of the civic body of maintaining underground parking lots appear to have fallen flat as the facility opposite the office medical officer, health, is in a shambles. Garbage dots the area, with puddles of water in every corner. The two-level lot can accommodate 700 two-wheelers and 100 four-wheelers. However, an HT team found one of the levels to be locked.
