If the data from city’s two most sought-after technical institutions is to be believed, the job market is looking up that too with good packages.
With the increase in number of companies participating in the placement process and slightly higher packages being offered than last year, more than half of the eligible students at University have already got jobs this year.
Students studying in Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University and PEC University of Technology have already got offers within the first two months of the placement drive.
“Initially, we were also worried due to the ongoing economic crisis. But the response so far has been good. Out of 310 eligible students, 171 have bagged jobs so far,” said Parminderjit Singh, training and placement officer, PEC.
A computer science student at PEC bagged job offer from Microsoft with an annual package of Rs 16.8 lakh. In computer science and IT, almost 80-90% students have bagged jobs.
Companies from Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Yahoo.com to ZS Associates have visited the campus, many of them for the first time.
“The average salary last time was R4.5 lakh, which this time is likely to touch R5 lakh. All those coming for campus placements are offering 10-20% higher packages than last year,” Parminderjit said.
At UIET, nearly 20 companies have visited the campus so far, while 10 more are lined up for next month. “Out of nearly 400 students eligible for campus placements, 200 have bagged jobs with an average salary of R3.7 lakh,” said Sarabjeet Singh, training and placement officer, UIET, said.
At UIET, the highest salary package of R7.5 lakh per annum offered by ZS Associates has been bagged by a computer science student. At UIET also Deloitte, Net Solutions and Nestle have come for the first time and here also computer science and IT students are most sought-after. However, officials say many companies especially those in the construction sector are yet to come.
“Not only packages are on higher side by 10-20%, but we have also been able to place 10- 20% more students this year as compared to last year,” Sarabjeet added.
Experts say with each passing year, they hope improvement in the market and also in the job prospects for those with good academic record and excellent communication skills. Also, top companies have now started recruiting from category B institutes rather than going for lowergrade students of IITs and IIMs.
