Union home minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday assured a delegation of Congress leaders led by Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda that he would ask the National Commission for Backward Classes to expedite the report on the demand for including Jats irrespective of their region or religion in the central list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) for reservation in jobs and educational institutions of the central government.

After meeting Chidambaram in New Delhi, Hooda said the delegation of leaders from Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh impressed upon him to consider the demands at the earliest. The delegation said the Jats were essentially an agrarian community contributing to the country's agricultural produce. But more than 95% of the community was living as marginal farmers with an average land holding of less than two acres.
