Chief secy tells DCs to gear up for flood protection

Punjab chief secretary Rakesh Singh on Wednesday directed deputy commissioners to make all necessary arrangements well in advance to tackle any kind of emergency during the monsoon season, besides updating all equipment and other technical support.

Punjab chief secretary Rakesh Singh on Wednesday directed deputy commissioners to make all necessary arrangements well in advance to tackle any kind of emergency during the monsoon season, besides updating all equipment and other technical support.

Reviewing flood-protection measures in the state during a meeting attended by all DCs and senior officers here, the chief secretary said the government had sanctioned Rs 10-lakh grant for each district for flood relief activities. He directed the DCs to keep close tabs on critical points in their respective jurisdictions to pre-empt any eventuality arising on account of heavy rain.
According to a government spokesperson, the DCs were also directed to increase surveillance at all vulnerable and crucial points.

The chief secretary asked the DCs to ensure that they were in full control to tackle any kind of eventuality arising out of waterlogging by ensuring availability of pumps to drain out water, adequate stock of medicine and identification of locations for camping sites.

He directed the DCs to fix the responsibility of the executive engineers concerned of irrigation and drainage departments to monitor vulnerable sites.
