A BJP leader whose dog attacked an eight-year-old boy to death at Ashok Vihar in the city on Saturday evening was arrested by the city police on Sunday.
A case under section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him.
The accused, Harkirat Singh Toor, is the head of the Punjab BJP NRI cell. Division number-1 SHO Harkirat Singh said the accused has been sent to judicial custody till October 19.
He said the dog would be handed over to the wildlife department on Monday. The child was going to a religious function in the locality and was bitten by Harkirat’s pet dog, a bull mastiff. The child
sustained severe head and stomach injuries that led to his death.
After the incident, the deceased’s father and local residents held protest and demanded arrest of the BJP leader.
