Dr Nitin M Nagarkar, a city doctor, will be the first director of the new All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur.

Dr Nagarkar, professor from the department of ENT of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, (GMCH-32) has been selected for the post. He has been selected for a five-year tenure.

The new AIIMS are being set under a special Act of Parliament with an aim to correct regional imbalances in tertiary-level healthcare in the country and attaining self-sufficiency in graduate and postgraduate medical education and training.

The union government had planned to set up six new AIIMS in Patna, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Raipur, and Jodhpur and Rishikesh.

The government is planning to start MBBS course from September 2012.  Dr Nagarkar is likely to take the position before July 23.

Dr Nagarkar hails from Maharashtra. He completed his MBBS degree with distinction in four subjects from Patna Medical College in 1987 and completed his MS (ENT) from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, in 1992.

Later, he worked as a lecturer at LTM Medical College and Hospital, Sion, Mumbai, from November 1994 to June 1996.

He came back to Chandigarh as senior lecturer at GMCH-32 in 1996. He had also worked with Royal College of Surgeons in England from 1999-2000 and served as medical superintendent at GMCH-32.

"The purpose of these institutes is to focus on the areas, which are underserved from the point of view of health care. These areas need to be developed," said Dr Nagarkar.

"So our focus will remain patient care of highest order and medical research on diseases from the Indian point of view," he added.

"It is a great achievement that such a young institute like GMCH-32, which has a history of just two decades, give a director to one of the institutes, which will lead a region," said Dr Raj Bahadur, director-principal, GMCH-32.
