Keeping in view increase in crime in the city, the Chandigarh Police have proposed to come up with another subdivision and five more police stations. The proposal has been forwarded to the UT administration and is likely to be sanctioned soon.
At present, there are three subdivisions - east, south and central - and 11 police stations. The new sub-division east-south will supervise the functioning of four police stations. The five new police stations will be set up at Sarangpur, Maloya, Sector 49, Mauli Jagran and IT Park.
UT inspector general (IG) RP Upadhyaya said, “We will use the resources already available with us for the new police stations. With the area increasing and the crime graph going up in some areas, there is need for new police stations.”
According to police sources, Dhanas, Sarangpur, Khuda Lahora and Khuda Jassu are becoming new hub of housing societies. The area of Khuda Lahora, Khuda Jassu, Sarangpur, Dhanas, Chaman Col o ny, Aman Col o ny, Milk Colony, Ambedkar Colony, Housing Board Colony, and EWS Colony is proposed to be covered under Sarangpur police station. At present, the population in the area is around 88,000. The reported crime cases in the area were 155 in 2012 and 146 in 2013. The complaints received during 2012 were 227 and in 2013 were 226.
Sector 49 police station has been proposed to cater to Sectors 48, 49, 50, 51 and 63, which are currently under the south subdivision. The police station in Maloya will include Sector 38 West, Maloya, Dadumajra and grain market of Sector 39.
Keeping in view the clashes re ported from Mauli Jag ran and surrounding areas, a police station is also being set up at Mauli Jagran. The area includes Raipur Kalan, Raipur Khurd, Makha n Majra , and Mauli Jagran and has a population of around 1.66 lakh dwellers. As many as 191 crime cases were registered last year.
The fifth police station has been proposed at Infor mation Technology Park. With many business houses setting base in the area, urbanisation has come up at Kishangarh, Bhagwanpura, Shastri Nagar and Indira Colony. The population of the IT Park area is stated to be more than 1 lakh. The crime graph suggests that 174 cases were registered.
Meanwhile, it has also been proposed to convert the Crime against Women and Children Wing into all-women police station, but the decision is pending.
