The Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) will auction 60 sites at the Sector 7 car bazaar on May 5. As many as 97 dealers have submitted applications to take part in the auction.
Car bazaar association president Gulshan Kumar, meanwhile, said the dealers were being forced to take part in the auction process.
“Certain provisions in the policy had been challenged by us in court, and its decision is awaited. Still, the MC is going ahead with the process. We, however, have full faith in the judiciary,” said Kumar.
Kumar said the car bazaar had been running from Sector 7 for the past 30 years and the dealers had “put in their blood and sweat to make it the biggest car bazaar in the region”.
“Now the MC is trying to throw us out, which is unjustified. The MC gets `60 to 65 lakh from us every year for availing ourselves of the parking space, which is used for free by other shopkeepers,” he said.
The members said they were ready to shift to some other permanent location if they were provided with all necessary facilities and sufficient parking space.
As per the approved policy, the city residents dealing in used cars or having an office in the city are allowed to participate in the auction. Also, the sites will be auctioned for a period of one year, which can be extended up to three years.
Earlier, only 43 car dealers were functioning from the market that comprises 60 sites. After this, some of dealers had moved the court. Thereafter, on August 11, 2014, the court had directed the civic body to frame a policy.
