Over 13,000 seats have been allotted after two rounds of counselling for Class 11 admissions in city government schools. The second round of counselling concluded on Saturday.
However, even as most leading schools in Chandigarh city already filled up, over 2,000 seats continue to remain vacant in government schools in rural areas of the union territory, said officials. Most of the vacant seats are under the reserved category, mainly due to lack of response for these seats. In the union territory, 15% seats are reserved for scheduled castes; 2% for the sports category; 3% for the physically challenged, 5% for children of defence personnel/ paramilitary; 2% for children/ grandchildren of freedom fighters and one additional seat per section for Kashmiri migrants.
Officials of the education department said that vacant seats under the reserved category will be allotted to candidates of the general category during third and final round of counselling, which the department plans to hold from August 13 to 26. Those yet to get admission to government schools may apply to rural schools, said department officials.
