Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday asked the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to soon sanction funds to initiate the Rs 100-crore project for upgrading the drainage system in waterlogged areas of the state.

Badal raised this issue with the NABARD team led by chief general manager (Punjab regional office) Naresh Gupta at a review meeting for the implementation of various projects amounting to Rs 661 crore to be funded by NABARD in the state in a phased manner.

The CM expressed concern that Muktsar, Fazilka and Faridkot needed emergent release of money for clearing and strengthening drains in waterlogged areas, a spokesman said here.

Gupta assured the chief minister that NABARD would sanction Rs 100 crore for addressing the issue of waterlogging effectively. He stated that NABARD could have disbursed more funds, but there was a limit of Rs 495 crore for the state.
