Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday constituted a joint monitoring committee to ensure timely implementation of lift irrigation schemes in the kandi region of Rupnagar, Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur and SAS Nagar districts.
A decision to this effect was taken by Badal at a meeting convened on the request of member of parliament from Anandpur Sahib Prem Singh Chandumajra here, a spokesman said.
The committee would comprise financial commissioner, development, and secretary, irrigation and power, to finalise the modalities for the prompt implementation of the lift irrigation project in the foothills region where people face acute scarcity of irrigation water.
The chief minister also asked senior officials of forests and other departments concerned to prepare a time-bound action plan to prevent wild animals from causing damage to crops in the kandi region.
It was also decided to seek funding from the union ministry of environment and forests for the people residing in these semi-forest areas of the kandi belt, the spokesman said.
The chief minister also gave the go ahead for the four-laning of Banga-Garhshankar-Anandpur Sahib and Nawanshahr-Garhshankar roads.
