Infamous Gujarat ‘snoopgate scandal’ came to haunt Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi once again. Union home minister Shushil Kumar Shinde on Friday said that the commission to probe into the ‘snoop gate’ will be will be set up before the results for Lok Sabha elections are declared on May 16.
“The cabinet already took a decision to appoint commission of inquiry to probe into the snooping of a young woman by Gujarat officials. The judge will be appointed before May 16,” Shinde told mediapersons here at press conference on Friday.
Shinde denied that the cabinet decision to appoint a judge in snoopgate tantamount to violation of code of conduct. “The cabinet took the decision to appoint the judge much earlier,” he said, taking a jibe at Modi saying, “I only fear that if being a chief minister he can order snooping on a young woman, what will happen to women security if he becomes the Prime Minister.”
Commenting on the blame game on twin FIRs against Modi for poll violations, Shinde said it was easy for the saffron party to criticise. “Someone who is aspiring to become Prime Minister should not do such thing,” he said.
Shinde expressed concern over BJP elections campaign, particularly that of Narendra Modi. “Elections in India were contested on philosophy and policies. Debates in the elections revolved around national and international issues. But this is for the first time that leaving aside BJP and Congress, the campaign is focused around individual Narendra Modi. It was the same BJP that raised national and international issues in the elections,” he said.
“Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi dreaming to become prime minister has only one agenda in the elections, that is to target AICC President Sonia Gandhi and AICC Vice president Rahul Gandhi,” he said.
Shinde said he and Modi were in charge for party affairs of their respective parties in Himachal Pradesh at the same time. “I am seeing Modi for the past 15 years. He never disclosed that he sold tea. But in the last six months, Modi developed a new story of tea seller to strike emotional chord with people,” he said.
“During the election rally in my constituency, Modi narrated the crowds that he was slapped by customer when he broke a glass while serving tea in the train. Earlier, he had maintained that he sold tea in Ahmedabad. People of the nation will not vote for Modi listening to his varies tea seller stories,” he added.
