On the recommendation of the financial commissioner, development, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday ordered an inquiry by the state vigilance bureau into the alleged embezzlement of 2,538 lakh tonne of wheat from a storage centre at Mullanpur, Ludhiana.

Punjab Agro Food Corporation Limited (PAFCL) manages the storage centre and the losses are estimated at Rs 4.5 crore.

A spokesperson of the chief minister's office said that in view of the serious irregularities, the chief minister ordered the probe.

The PAFCL managing director had deputed a special team for verification of the wheat stocked at various plinths of the Mullanpur centre on September 7 and 8 and consequently an FIR was registered on September 10, against Mela Singh, plinth in-charge at the time.
