Call it Modi wave or resentment against ruling Congress government, chief minister Virbhadra Singh’s wife and Mandi Congress nominee Pratibha Singh lost the 2014 Lok Sabha elections by a margin of 39,796 votes.

Bharatiya Janata Party’ (BJP) nominee Ramswaroop Sharma, contesting his first election, secured 3, 62, 547 votes, while Pratibha managed to get 3, 22,751 votes.

Riding the Modi wave, Ramswaroop secured lead in 12 Vidhan Sabha segments of the total 17 that falls under Mandi Lok Sabha seat. Ramswaroop took the lead in the initial stages during postal ballot counting and maintained it till the end.

Pratibha Singh has represented Mandi in Lok Sabha twice -- in 2004 and 2013 by-poll. In 2013 by poll, Pratibha trounced her rival by more than 1.36 lakh votes.
