Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would now look after the portfolios held by the former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who resigned from the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.
Badal would now look after the departments of Home Affairs, Information and Public Relations, Water Supply and Sanitation, NRIs Affair, Sports and Youth Welfare and Non Conventional Energy, earlier held by the Deputy Chief Minister, an official spokesman said in Chandigarh on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had been accepted by Punjab Governor S F Rodrigues on Thursday morning, the spokesman said.
Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal yesterday resigned as Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab after he failed to get elected to the Assembly within the stipulated time of six months from the day of appointment.
47-year-old Sukhbir, son of Chief Minister Badal, took oath as deputy chief minister of Punjab on January 21 this year, the first case of a father and son sharing the top two posts in a government.
The junior Badal is currently abroad and is likely to return this week.
Meanwhile, bypolls to three Assembly seats of Jalalabad, Kahnuwan and Banur are slated for August three.
Sukhbir is likely to contest from Jalalabad constituency, which fell vacant following the election of Sher Singh of Akali Dal to Lok Sabha.
