The Congress has cancelled its political conference scheduled to be held on Hola Mohalla here on March 16, whereas the Shiromani Akali Dal has made it clear that it will go ahead with its conference.

Rana KP Singh, former MLA and chairman of the organising committee for the Congress conference, said it was cancelled in view of the Election Commission (EC) order against organising political conferences on the religious occasion as the model code of conduct was in place.

Meanwhile, SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said the party would organise its conference as scheduled on the stipulated site, which was a commercial and parking site situated outside Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib complex.

He said the party had sent a reply to the Election Commission assuring it that the model code of conduct would be followed.

Reacting to the cancellation of the Congress conference, Cheema said it was because of the infighting in the Rupnagar district Congress and the threat by a faction to boycott the poll campaign of party candidate Ravneet Singh Bittu over being ignored by Rana KP Singh for the conference.

SAD (Amritsar) district president Fauja Singh Dhanauri expressed surprise over the election commission's directive, saying political conferences had been part of Hola Mohalla for decades.
