The Punjab Congress has demanded a probe by the CBI into the use of discretionary grants by cabinet ministers for personal benefits and into assets of former minister Sucha Singh Langah.

It has been revealed that Langah, when he was minister in the previous SAD-BJP regime, got grants for colleges run by an educational society that he heads. One of two colleges - named Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College in Kalanaur -- does not exist.

Condemning Langah, district Congress president and Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who defeated Langah in the assembly polls, said, "Langah has crossed all limits. He befooled the public of his own constituency." He said that Kalanaur needed a college, "but instead of providing a college, Langah committed a fraud in the name of a non-existent college".

"I won't ask the government for a probe, as the state vigilance bureau is a puppet of the Akali-BJP regime. The bureau has already given Langah the clean chit in a disproportionate assets case. So, our party will approach the high court demanding a CBI probe," said Randhawa, adding, "Till a few years ago, Langah was a small farmer. But now his family owns several crores worth of properties."

Randhawa demanded that chief minister Badal break his silence on "the loot of government exchequer by his cabinet colleagues". "After Gulzar Singh Ranike (who resigned after a scam in grant disbursal in his segment Attari was exposed), Langah's misdeed has opened another Pandora's box. The CM must take responsibility." He said he was not expecting much from the CM, "but at least he must get a forgery case registered against Langah".

Randhawa also demanded that Langah's Guru Arjun Dev Nursing College in Dhariwal be taken over by the government. "Langah used government money to build his nursing college. The government should take over the nursing college and build a school for poor students."

A delegation of the District Congress Committee would soon convene a meeting in Kalanaur to brief the public about the fraud committed by Langah, he added.
