Terming the murder of an assistant sub-inspector in Amritsar as a blatant example of deteriorating law and order in the state, the Congress on Thursday demanded immediate resignation of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who happens to be home minister.

"The dastardly killing of ASI Ravinderpal Singh by an Akali leader at Amritsar amounts to the total collapse of the law and under and breakdown of the Constitution in Punjab. The Congress demands immediate resignation of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on moral grounds," former Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira told reporters here.

"If Akali goons can kill a police officer in uniform, whose only fault was that he was trying to protect the honour of his daughter, one can imagine the plight of the ordinary citizens," he added.

Khaira said more baffling was the fact that the accused first fired on the legs of the ASI and took 20 minutes to bring a rifle from their house to kill him a few yards from the police station. "The fact is that the Punjab Police are working like a private army of the Badal family. The Akali leaders in the state consider themselves above the law," he said.

"When DGP Sumedh Singh Saini himself is facing serious charges in a special CBI court at Delhi, what justice can he give to the citizens?" questioned Khaira.

"The Congress demands immediate dismissal of Saini as DGP and investigation by a sitting high court judge into the killing of the ASI," he said.
