Punjab Congress MLAs on Friday condemned the SAD-BJP government for purchasing two bullet-proof BMW cars at a cost of Rs 7 crore for "personal use" by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Badal.
In a statement here, MLAs Randeep Singh, Navtej Singh Cheema, Gurkirat Singh Kotli, Ajit Inder Singh Mofar, Ramanjit Singh Sikki and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria said that earlier the chief minister had given the nod for the purchase of an aeroplane worth Rs 75 crore for use by Sukhbir.
"Badals are using luxury at the cost of the public exchequer; instead, Punjab needs to take strict austerity measures to cope with the economic crisis looming large over the state," the MLAs said.
The MLAs said the SAD-BJP government was not able to pay salaries to its employees and was taking overdraft from the Reserve Bank of India to meet day-to-day expenses. The government had taken Rs 700 crore loan to pay the salaries of staff and had failed to pay 8% DA (dearness allowance) instalment to its employees due for the past six months after the Centre announced it in January.
