Congress workers on Wednesday met Punjab Election Commission secretary ML Sharma over the rejection of the nominations papers of a sarpanch candidate.
Led by local MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, the Congress workers, during their meeting with Sharma, claimed that Vikramjit Singh Brar, the returning officer of Kharar, had intentionally rejected the nomination papers of Devinder Kaur, who was going to contest the election for sarpanch of Sohana village.
Sidhu alleged that Brar rejected the papers on grounds that Devinder Kaur did not provide the no-dues certificate from the panchayat, though it was not needed.
He claimed that the papers were rejected under the influence of Akali leaders and former sarpanch Parminder Singh. Contacted, Brar refuted the allegations. "Devinder Kaur had not attached the required affidavit. Therefore the nomination papers were rejected. It was even discussed in front of additional deputy commissioner Puneet Goyal and he agreed with my view," said returning officer Vikramjit Singh Brar.
Sidhu, meanwhile, requested Sharma to initiate an inquiry into the incident. He also warned that all Congress-backed candidates would withdraw their names if justice was not served. Sharma assured the Congress workers of a recheck of the nomination papers and a through inquiry into the case.
