The Punjab Congress on Wednesday questioned the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for accepting huge funds from real-estate companies, citing records of the Election Commission (EC), while demanding a probe into the allegations that the SAD-BJP alliance had approved projects of these donors in lieu of party funds in the recent past.
Making these allegations in a joint statement here, Congress MLAs Balbir Singh Sidhu, Jagmohan Kang, Amrik Singh Dhillon and Randeep Singh Nabha said the SAD had submitted the list of donors to the EC and it was surprising that the companies named in the list were those who got favours from the state government.
"The name of a Mumbai-based detective agency, Trig Detectives Private Limited, run by a resident of Punjab, has also figured for donating Rs 50 lakh to the SAD," they said.
The Congress also demanded a probe into the detective agency's payment to the SAD. They said the agency might be involved in spying on Badals' political opponents.
The party also demanded an independent inquiry into the allegations that top SAD leaders had benami shares in real-estate companies. "Eight such real-estate bigwigs have their projects in and around Mohali," they said.
"It is not possible that these companies would have donated voluntarily to the ruling party," the Congress leaders said, accusing the SAD of "forced collection of funds from companies setting up projects in Punjab".
