Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Capt Amarinder Singh on Sunday said the party endorsed the stand of late chief minister Beant Singh's family that the death sentence of Balwant Singh Rajoana should be commuted to life imprisonment.

Amarinder also offered support and cooperation to the state government, whether legal or by way of making an appeal to the President in this regard.

Amarinder's stand is in contrast to Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar's statement in a section of the media on Saturday that the party would stay away from the issue and let the law take its own course. Jakhar had also stated that the Congress would not become party to any resolution seeking commuting of Rajoana's sentence.

Referring to the developments following the court orders for Rajoana's hanging, the PPCC president said, "Sardar Beant Singh gave his life for peace in Punjab and members of his family today are united in their belief that peace must be maintained at all costs."

He said the Congress endorsed the view of Beant Singh's family that the death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment and it would also support the government on any steps taken in this regard, whether or an appeal to the President.
