The Punjab Congress on Sunday accused the state BJP of "shedding crocodile tears" over the plight of urban people on e-trip, a fresh system for the traders to submit taxes.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is going with deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for personal gains and, thus, compromising the interests of urban people, industry and traders," Punjab Congress leaders OP Soni, Charanjit Singh Channi and Tarlochan Singh Soond submitted in a joint statement here.

They said the BJP leadership had kneeled in front of the deputy CM on the e-trip system that required review. The leaders said the BJP ministers in the cabinet never had opposed exorbitant taxes on urban people.

SAD reacts

Offended by the Congress statement, the Shiromani Akali Dal has accused the rival party of trying to create a rift between the two ruling allies.

"This politics of the Congress is not going to yield any result," SAD spokesman Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said here on Sunday, adding that the SAD-BJP alliance had stood the test of time.
