The Congress suffered a jolt in Nurpur Bedi area when its more than three dozen leaders and workers including a Panchayat Samiti member and several sarpanches quit the party to join Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday.

The leaders announced their decision to join SAD in the presence of SAD secretary and local member of legislative assembly (MLA) Daljit Singh Cheema at a function held at Tibba Taprian village.

Prominent among those who joined the SAD included Chuhar Singh and his wife and Garbhagha zone Panchayat Samiti member Indu Devi; Diwan Singh, sarpanch of Haripur Fulre; Gurdas Ram, sarpanch of Garbaga; Parkash Chand, sarpanch of Khadbathlor; Mehar Singh, Garhdolian sarpanch; Prem Singh, former sarpanch of Haripur Fulre; former sarpanch Bachitar Singh; Dhani Ram, former sarpanch of Tibba Taprian; Ramesh Chand and Kuldip Singh, secretary of Haripur Fulre.

They members claimed that Congress was 'playing tricks' with the people of the country and its leaders and workers. They added that they were fed up with the policies of the party and, therefore, decided to join SAD.

Welcoming these leaders to the party fold, Cheema said Congress had always propagated and adopted negative politics in the country and its approach towards Punjab had remained destructive.
