Congress workers led by Rupnagar District Congress Committee president Harbhag Singh Saini held a demonstration here on Friday and burnt an effigy of Punjab revenue and NRI affairs minister Bikram Singh Majithia over his alleged involvement in the drug trade.

The Congress workers gathered at Naina Devi Chowk and proceeded towards the Virasat-e-Khalsa, the venue of the NRI Sammelan. However, the police stopped them near the bus stand, where they burnt the effigy.

Saini said the Congress workers had organised the protest to show Majithia's "real face" to the NRI delegates.

Meanwhile, the police took away local Congress leader Ran Bahadur Rana, who had threatened to sit on a hunger strike over the Majithia issue, from his house early in the morning.

The police also took into custody some leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), including Fauja Singh Dhanauri, Kuldeep Singh Bhagowal and Bhupinder Singh for trying to distribute copies of a letter written by party president Simranjit Singh Mann to NRI delegates to make them aware of the "atrocities" being committed on Sikhs in India and the alleged connivance of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal in this regard.
