The Congress on Monday wrote to the Election Commission of India (EC), expressing its apprehension over reports of ad hoc employees of the Punjab government being deputed for counting in Amritsar.

In a letter addressed to the EC, Karanpal Sekhon, election agent of Congress candidate Capt Amarinder Singh, said the party had learnt that ad hoc employees were being deputed for counting with the promise that their jobs would be regularised if they favour BJP candidate Arun Jaitley.

The party said EC rules clearly stated that counting officers should be state or central government gazetted officers, not ad hoc employees. The letter said the EC must not only ensure that all rules and norms were followed but also see that no manipulation was allowed during counting in Amritsar on May 16.
