In what can be called as good news for the city residents, especially migratory population, now 5kg cooking cylinders will be available at subsidised rates up to a maximum limit of 34 cylinders in a year.
Till now, the cooking gas (LPG) was available for domestic use in 14.2kg cylinders but now, even those wanting to buy 5kg cylinders can also get it at cheaper rates.
Though the scheme to provide 5kg cylinders to consumers was started in the city about a year ago, it was not popular among residents. However, now with the subsidy being provided on these cylinders, sales are expected to go up.
According to dealers, the scheme will be helpful for people living on rent, including the service class and students.
The consumers will be able to get the 5 kg LPG cylinder by showing just an identification card to a dealer.
According to the ministry of oil official release, the consumers with regular LPG connection - those who have enrolled themselves for cooking gas supply with a local distributor/dealer - can avail of either of 14.2-kg or 5-kg cylinders.
Also, consumer will have to give a declaration of availing either of the two at the beginning of the year. Any consumer opting for 14.2kg cylinder cannot midway switch to 5kg cylinder and vice-a-versa.
"This is because the subsidy entitlement per household is fixed - 12 cylinders of 14.2kg or 34 bottles of 5kg each in a year,"stated the release.
Non-registered consumers can however avail of market priced 5kg cylinders from petrol pump without much paper work. These cylinders are available off-the-shelf.
