Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, and BUSH Academy, Khadoor Sahib, registered contrasting wins on the second day of the 13th ONGC SN Vohra Memorial sub-junior (under-14) hockey tournament, being played at the Sector-18 stadium, on Sunday.

In the closely fought first match, Surjit Hockey Academy managed to edge out SGPC Hockey Academy, Faridkot, 2-1.

Against the run of play, the SGPC team drew first blood; they were put into lead by Simranjot, who scored a brilliant field goal in the very first minute of play.

The early setback proved to be a wake-up call for the Surjit Academy team, and their backline put up better resistance from thereon. In the meantime, their forwards started testing the SGPC defence by making frequent forays.

The tactic paid off in the 35th minute, when Sudershan scored the equaliser in the 35th minute of play.

After half time, Sudershan again converted a goal scoring opportunity, in the 42nd minute, to put his team 2-1 ahead. With no more goals coming in the remaining time, Surjit Hockey Academy walked away with the victory.

In the other match of the day, BUSH Academy plundered the team of MBCT, Bassi Pathana, 5-0, and also qualified for the semifinals. In the lopsided encounter, Prabhjot opened the account for the winners in the 32nd minute, and again scored a goal for the side in the 47th minute to make it 3-0.

In between, Vanshdeep had doubled the lead with his 43rd-minute strike. The winners tally was rounded off by Parminder (51st and 53rd minutes), who scored two goals within a space of two minutes to seal the deal in favour of the Khadoor Sahib outfit. This was BUSH Academy’s second consecutive win in as many matches.

Earlier, they had defeated Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy 2-1 in their opening match played on Saturday. In the other opening encounter, SGPC Hockey Academy and Euro International School Group, Gurgaon, had played out a 1-1 draw.
