State police chief Paramdeep Singh Gill recently attended a function organised by a man who has got criminal cases pending against him.

Sukhdev Singh has served a jail term in a case of attempted murder and is wanted in two more cases.

On June 11, he had organised the function in Gulabi Bagh so that DGP Gill could meet the locals. Senior police officers attended the event.

Gill, said to be eyeing a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket from Moga assembly constituency after he retires in September, has visited the area often. His father Nachhatar Singh Gill had represented the area earlier.

In 2000, a judicial magistrate in Moga had declared Singh a proclaimed offender (PO) for failing to cooperate with the police despite an arrest warrant.

In October 2000, he had allegedly opened fire after a fracas at a wedding in Kotkapura. After jumping bail repeatedly, he was named a PO again in September 2003.

In March 1996, Singh was jailed after he attempted to murder one Karamjeet Singh Manchanda. But his sentence was commuted and he was released in May 1998. Five months later, Manchanda was shot dead. Singh was acquitted for lack of evidence.

On November 4, 2000, he was accused in a case of sedition and criminal conspiracy at Ghal Khurad in Ferozepur. The trial is currently on.

Repeated attempts to contact the DGP proved futile.

Moga SSP Snehdeep Sharma said he was unaware if Singh was a PO. “Let me check the records,” he said.
