Drama was witnessed at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 27 here on Tuesday as police were called in after two boys of Class 12 reportedly harassed a girl classmate. Eventually, the matter was settled amicably.

It started after the two boys “giggled at” a girl. The girl immediately called her parents. The matter worsened when the relatives of the girl accused principal Sunita Singh of not taking stern action against the boys, while the principal claimed ignorance saying that the class teacher did not inform her about the incident. Heated arguments ensued, and both sides called the police.

The argument reached a level when the principal suspended the boys, and the girl’s parents threatened to move a formal complaint of sexual harassment (‘eve-teasing’) against the boys.

But it ended after the relatives of the girl agreed not to pursue the matter further on the condition that the school issue the boys a “final warning” and take a written undertaking that they would not repeat such acts.

A police official later said the matter could have been resolved without police intervention since it was a classroom issue and “not exactly an ‘eveteasing’ problem”. Principal Sunita Singh also asserted that the matter was “blown out of proportion, partly due to miscommunication on the part of the teacher, who did not inform me timely”.
