Highlight Story

Five days after a 22-year-old drunk woman was picked up by a sub-inspector and a woman head constable from outside a Sector-8 discotheque and kept at police station for about 7 hours, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), central, Ashish Kapoor has recommended departmental inquiry against the two cops.

It was on around 2.45am December 13 when the woman was found in an inebriated state outside Score discotheque, and HC Amarjeet Kaur and SI Ramesh Kumar took her in their Gypsy to the Sector-3 police station. The DSP has prepared a detailed report now into the incident. It is learnt that even though the woman was unable to answer queries due to not being in her senses, the police kept asking her about her address, her family background and other details.

Instead of rushing the woman to a hospital, the cops made her sit in the police station from 3am to 10am, when the parents were informed.

Though the cops in question said they had not informed the family earlier as the woman had requested them not to call them, the DSP came to know of the incident and probed the matter.

Score to get stick too

The police are also preparing a detailed report on the functioning of Score discotheque as to how it was functioning much after it was supposed to shut down at 1.30am as per the rules. DSP Ashish Kapoor said security camera footage of the discotheque showed people coming out as late as 2.30am.

Note, however, that police control room (PCR) vehicles are supposed to get discotheques and lounges closed at the stipulated time. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sukhchain Singh Gill, when contacted, said he was yet to go through the report would take action as per the facts presented in the DSP's report.

Women drunk on the road: Not a first

This incident of a woman being found drunk outside a nightclub by cops is not in isolation. In the past two years, Chandigarh police claim to have come across 15 such cases.

In January, a woman in an inebriated state created ruckus at a dhaba in Burail. The middle-aged woman was handed over to her family by the police after someone called the parents. In another incident the same month, a woman in her early 20s was allegedly thrashed by some unidentified persons in Sector 22.

The police were informed by a passerby.

A 35-year-old woman was also found lying on the roadside in Sector 26, with bruises giving the impression that she had been assaulted.

Then in June, a 25-year-old woman was found lying on the roadside in Sector 18. High drama prevailed after she created ruckus at the Sector-16 government hospital. The same month, a 30-year-old woman was found unconscious at a Transport Chowk in Sector 26 and was admitted to the Sector-16 hospital.
