Finally setting things right, UT police after forgetting to list witness to prove age of minor victim of sexual harassment, on Friday submitted supplementary chargesheet naming the school principal as witness to prove her age.
Additional district and sessions judge Anshu Shukla had been conducting a day-to-day trial since March 17 against dance teacher Akash alias Eric, a resident of Panchkula, for allegedly molesting and extorting money from his 17-year-old student. The next hearing will now be held on March 24.
The court on Thursday had granted time to UT police to file a supplementary chargesheet to list witness to prove victim’s age that was filed on Friday.
As per the allegations, the victim, a student of a leading school in Chandigarh, used to learn dance at Akash’s academy in Sector 44. Claiming that he had some lewd pictures of her, he had been extorting money from her since 2013, and even made physical contact, unwelcome advances and explicit sexual overtures.
After the girl revealed the incident to her father, he approached the police who arrested the accused on January 9.
However, as the police failed to file challan within the 60-day period, the court on March 15 granted bail to Akash. But as he failed to arrange surety, he is still behind the bars.
Police callous from the beginning
The UT police have from the very beginning been lackadaisical in the case investigation to the extent that they failed to file challan against the accused, thus facilitating his bail.
On March 13, Sector 34 station house officer (SHO) inspector Kirpal Singh and Zile Singh, incharge of Sector 49 police post, were sent to the Police Lines pending an inquiry for delay in submitting a challan against the accused in a case of sexual harassment. The department has suspended the investigating officer (IO) ASI Paramjit Singh for callousness after the court pulled up the police
