During his first formal interaction with the traffic cops, inspector general of police (IGP) RP Upadhyaya talked about their safety. “The cops should open the packet and insert a tube in the sensor in the presence of motorists so that they do not get apprehensive of it being used earlier,” he said.
The development is significant, as in some cases liquor is left in the tube and when it is reused a motorist doubts the result. As of now, the Chandigarh Police are using 45 alcosensors at all barricades and police stations.
Taking up the issue of cops' safety, the IGP advised them not to jump in front of the vehicles to check violations. Upadhyaya asked them to use barricades and if a violator manages to escape, they should flash his vehicle number so that he is caught at the next interception.
He also asked them to be polite and courteous, but at the same time firm with the violators. He also warned the cops against indulging in corruption.
UT superintendent of police (SP) Maneesh Chaudhary said the department was buying barricades worth Rs 24 lakh and other safety gadgets to ensure safety of the cops deployed at nakas.
He said they had bought reflector jackets, hand-held lights and other safety equipment to ensure that motorists could locate cops from a distance and avoid banging into them.
The Chandigarh traffic police are also procuring portable speed breakers with reflector tapes, which would be visible from at least a distance of 100 metre. The traffic police are also getting 38 video and still cameras to capture violations at nakas.
