Police here have registered a case of cheating on a complaint by RS Chalia, the former additional director general of police, Punjab.

Chalia has alleged that he was cheated of Rs 45 lakh by a Panchkula couple to whom he had rented out his showroom in Sector 21. The accused - Hardeep Singh and Sonia -had opened a boutique at the showroom and had allegedly taken a loan of Rs 45 lakh from the former police officer for expanding their business.

When Chalia asked for the money, Hardeep Singh gave him 10 cheques which allegedly bounced. Later, the accused fled with their belongings.

Chalia has submitted the complaint to the Sector-5 police station. An FIR was registered under sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on Friday. The economic offences wing (EOW) of Panchkula police, headed by inspector Dharamveer, is investigating the case. “The couple had cheated a number of people. One of them is a doctor of Alchemist Hospital. We have received more complaints against them. We are investigating the cases from all angles,” said inspector Dharamveer.
