Additional District and Sessions Judge R.S. Attri on Tuesday convicted five persons for the abduction and gang-rape of a German tourist in September last year.

It may be recalled that the victim, a German tourist, was allegedly abducted from the city’s Hotel Taj in the early hours of September 27.

The five accused drove her around and then took her to Ambala, 50km from Chandigarh, where she was raped.

The victim in her initial statements to the police and the judicial magistrate had alleged assault.

After DNA tests were conducted on her, the CFSL team, however, said that she was raped.

In her statement to the court, the girl said she had been raped but could not convey it due to language problems as she was not fluent in English. Also, the stigma attached with rape had weighed on her mind.

After investigation the case, police had booked five persons — Pankaj Punia, Manvir Singh alias Jolly, Harpreet Singh alias Dalli, Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukhi and Sompal — for gang-rape, kidnapping and wrongful confinement, assault and criminal intimidation.
