The operations cell of the Chandigarh Police on Saturday claimed to have busted a gang of five persons involved in betting on the ongoing cricket test between India and England being played at the Oval, London. Ten mobile phones, Rs 8,400 in cash and two cars were recovered from their possession, said police.

Satbir Singh, DSP, operations cell, said that the five accused promised to pay people an amount seven times the money they bet, if they win. The police arrested the accused by laying a trap.

Those arrested have been identified as Naresh Gupta and Sunil Kumar, both residents of Phase-II, Ram Darbar, Chandigarh, Kishan Lal, a resident of Sector-15, Panchkula (Haryana), Dilbag Rai, a resident of Modern Housing Complex, Manimajra, Chandigarh, and Rajiv Kumar, a resident of Mohali (Punjab).

The accused were later produced in a local court on Saturday and were send to judicial custody for 14 days.

The DSP said that the accused were alluring the people by way of calling them at public places and telling them that whoever will win the bet will get seven times of their money they would put on stake. During investigations, it had also come to notice that the arrested persons would not refund the money even to the winning customers. Acting on a tip-off, a team of the operations cell sent a decoy-customer with currency notes of Rs 500. The team apprehended the accused when they accepted the money from the decoy customer.

Ten mobile phones, Rs 8,400 in cash, including the currency note of Rs 500 which was given by the decoy-customer to the accused and a note-book in which they were maintaining their betting records were recovered from the possession of the accused. Two cars, a Honda City and an I-20, used by the accused were also seized. A case under sections 13A/3/67 of the Gambling Act and 420/120-B of the IPC has been registered at Industrial Area police station at Chandigarh against the accused.
