The conviction of Vijender Singh and Renu for killing former’s wife Pooja (32) who had refused to divorce him once again brings to the fore the dark side of illicit relations.
Vijender had married Pooja, who hailed from Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, in July 2008 after falling in love with her. The two had met in Chandigarh where Pooja was pursuing her B.Tech from Panjab University whereas Vajinder was doing his hotel management.
Within two years of marriage, the love fizzled out making way for strained relationship as Vijender started affair with Renu. Vajinder met Renu at a pizza joint in Jalandhar where they worked together for some time. Renu shifted to Chandigarh. As Pooja refused to divorce Vajinder, it was then he decided to kill her and Renu helped him execute the murder.
Renu and Vijender are not the only ones who planned and executed murder in order to lead a life together.
Bunty and Sarita
In December 2013, a Chandigarh court awarded life term to dismissed UT constable Basant Singh, alias Bunty, 26, who was accused of committing three murders, along with his girlfriend Sarita Rani, 23.
Bunty was arrested from New Delhi barely 24 hours after he stabbed a Chandigarh police inspector to death on the intervening night of June 7-8 last year after the officer had stopped the two for checking in Sector 17.
Before this, Basant had murdered Sarita’s husband and mother-in-law in a Sonepat village on April 18, just three days after Sarita’s alleged forced wedding, and fled with her for the second time in three years. They had been forced to return when they eloped first as the families were opposed to their affair.
In June 2012, an SAS Nagar court handed life term to Neki Nalwa and her lover Himmat Singh, alias Brandy, for conspiracy and murder of Quark City engineer Sukhwinderjit Singh, Neki’s husband. Neki and Brandy had a long-running affair, and as such Neki and her husband had even filed for divorce as she wanted to be with Brandy. But as Sukhwinderjit sought to mend the relationship and withdrew his side of mutual divorce petition, on December 4, 2005, Neki took him out for a post-dinner walk and called Brandy. Sukhwinderjit was shot by Brandy from point-blank range with a .32-bore pistol. Brandy had allegedly got cartridges from friend Paramvir Singh, who was handed six-year jail.
