The union culture ministry has given a no-objection certificate (NOC) to the Rohtak municipal corporation for carrying out repair, renovation, reconstruction of public streets, drains and laying sewer, water supply line, affixing streetlights on existing poles in the Khokhrakot area, declared a protected site by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).

An official letter to this effect was handed over to the chairman of Haryana assembly petition committee and Rohtak MLA Bharat Bhushan Batra by the director (monument), ASI, M Nambirajan at a meeting of the petition committee at Haryana Bhawan in New Delhi.

Batra said the ancient site of Khokhrakot was declared a protected area by the ASI in 1938 and a notification was issued for about 225 acre land for protection of the ancient remains. Later, 100 metre area around the Khokhrakot protected area was declared a prohibited area and next 200 metre was also declared as regulated area in 1992.

The Rohtak MLA said therefore, no construction work and developmental works could be undertaken in the area without the permission of the ASI and national monuments authority.

He said no developmental works could be carried out in the area for the past two decades and the area residents were living in inhuman conditions. There were no regular arrangements for sewerage, drinking water and electricity for them.

On the new development, Batra said now the national monuments authority has permitted developmental works in the prohibited and regulated area adjacent to the Khokhrakot ancient area. It will pave the way for providing necessary civic facilities to the residents of this unprotected area.
