Custodial death: eighth accused held

The city police have arrested eighth accused in the Bikramjit Singh custodial death case. Accused Deep Raj runs Guru Nanak Tractors agency on Qadian Road in Batala, where inspector Naurang Singh and his team had interrogated the victim. Held under Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC, Raj was remanded in four-day custody.

Earlier, ASIs Gulshanbir Singh and Surinder Singh; and headconstables Amandeep Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Angrez Singh, Randhir Singh, and Maktool Singh had been arrested. A case of kidnapping was made against them.

On May 18, inspector Naurang Singh and head constables Amandeep Singh and Lakhwinder Singh were di s missed. After reporting, Bikramjit Singh of Algon Kothi village in Tarn Taran district escaped from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, police had kidnapped him from the medical facility on May 5. He died, later, allegedly during interrogation.
