A Dalit of Dabra village in the district committed suicide on Tuesday evening after he came to know about his 16-year-old daughter's gangrape.
The Class-12 student had told her parents about the incident more than a week after it happened on September 9. The girl alleged that she was on her way to meet her uncle at Patel Nagar here when her boyfriend, Sonu, who belongs to an upper caste, met her and took her on a motorcycle to a secluded place. She alleged that Sonu called at least eight of his friends, who all raped her.
The girl's father, Krishan, an agricultural labourer, reported the incident to village elders. The accused allegedly threatened the family that they would circulate the girl's nude photos if the police were informed about the matter. Subsequently, Krishan ended his life by consuming a poisonous substance.
Dalit panchayat members called on superintendent of police (SP) B Satheesh Balan on Wednesday. Bahujan Samaj Party leaders Bajrang Indal and Sanjay Chauhan alleged that influential people of the village were putting pressure on Raj Kumar, elder brother of deceased, to withdraw the complaint.
Talking to HT, Balan said, "I have sent station house officer (SHO, Sadar) Sulochana Gajraj, along with the rape victim, to the spot to collect evidence. A case has been registered under sections 376 (rape) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. The postmortem will be conducted on Thursday."
